The Federal Government on Sunday directed all its ministries, department and agencies to update their bank details to the uniform account numbers.

A statement issued by the Deputy Director, Press, in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, Mr. Charles Nwodo, said the update became imperative in order to ensure the full compliance with the regulations of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The statement said any MDA that failed to comply with the directive might experience delay in the payment of its salary henceforth.

The apex bank had fixed July 1 as the deadline for all bank customers to update their accounts to the 10-digit Nigerian Uniform Bank Account Number.

The  statement  reads in part: “The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation is advising all federal ministries, departments and agencies who have not done so to update their bank details as the deadline by the CBN for compliance with the Nigerian Uniform Bank Account Number policy became effective July 1, 2013.

“Failure to comply may result in the delay of the payment of salaries henceforth.

“However, if any worker experiences any delay in the payment of his/her salary, he/she should confirm that the banking details have been accordingly updated and forwarded to Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.”

The CBN had released the guidelines on NUBAN scheme in August 2010 to achieve a uniform numbering structure among all Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria within nine months.

NUBAN, according to the CBN, has the potential to resolve problems with electronic payments in Nigeria as many of them are related to specification of wrong beneficiary account numbers.

The initial deadline was June 1, 2011. This was extended by the CBN to June 1, 2012; and at the expiration of the date, it was further extended to July 1, 2013.

The OAGF statement further stated that since NUBAN became fully operational on July 1, 2013, all members of staff of MDAs were supposed to have complied with it.
